From as far back as I can remember I did not ‘fit in’ with my neurotypical peers at my mainstream school.
I struggled with maths and preferred to read adventure stories like The Famous Five and The secret Seven.
A figure of fun and a child much bullied describe my school years perfectly.
I was most at home with butterfly’s and snails, playing alone and happy to dream of the fairy civilization I would one day make my way back to.
After leaving school early with no GCSES due to my challenging and as yet un-diagnosed behavior I became a mother at age fifteen to a son.
I went back to college and did a course on teaching primary aged children literacy which I was thrilled to get a level three pass in, it gave me a taste for writing and I began to pen the odd story as an outlet.
I had another three children, two boys and a daughter with failed relationships and worked as a cleaner in pubs and homes.
My children were and are everything to me though as a young mum and un-diagnosed Aspergien I made mistakes that now looking back could so easily have been resolved.
Through having two more children, a son and daughter and realizing one was on the autistic spectrum I was soon to be diagnosed myself as having Aspergers.
I then came to realize my other children were on the spectrum and some are now diagnosed some are not.
When you have never known neurotypical behavior from your children you have nothing to compare behavior to. I therefore took their quirks as they should have been taken, typical to them.
I became aware that not all parents are as accepting of Autism as I after seeing a group named CD Autism on Facebook.
I began campaigning against autistic mistreatment, in particular MMS which is chlorine dioxide bleach being used in enemas and oral solution to ‘cure’ Autism.
I have worked with the BBC, BEN TV,The Independent, The Times and London Live to expose this vile abuse.
With the help of wonderful colleagues we have recently seen the closure of three websites that were selling MMS and promoting it as a cure for Autism.
I also have a face book group which supports Autistics and Parents of spectrum children, we have meet ups in the community giving much needed socializing opportunity for individuals with a peer group that not only understands but supports.
I have also recently opened another support group for parents who home educate their autistic children as we can feel very cut off, it’s good to get the children out and see the parents relax with people who understand.
I began writing a year ago and have a website

It’s called ‘It’s An Autism Thing I’ll Help You Understand It’ and you can see it on www.stass publications.co.uk
I wanted, no needed parents and professionals to see things from an Autistic perspective, and to help them understand behaviors and self stimulation.
To many times I’ve seen the urge to understand stifled in the curious as they are palmed off with ‘It’s an Autism thing, you wouldn’t understand it!’.
I thought well let’s help then to! Hopefully the empowerment the parents and carers will feel can help make their charges feel more understood and supported.
I continue to write with another two children’s books penned and ready to go.
As for my fairy folk, I firmly believe I found them when I discovered the Autistic community three years ago!

Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) is basically bleach which is being peddled as a cure for autism. Emma goes above and beyond to highlight the dangers of using this dangerous and illegal product as a treatment for autism. She runs groups on Facebook, works closely with colleagues and is making the world a better place.”

As a parent of two Asperger’s kids, but not an Aspie myself, I stand with a foot in both camps and have to take a lot ‘on the chin’ even from people who should know better. What we crave is greater understanding. What we know is that there is no cure. People pedaling drugs purporting to ‘cure’, and then to cause such disastrous suffering and potential long term damage – all because wicked and unscrupulous people are trying to make a financial gain out of fear should be halted in its tracks NOW! She is an amazing role model to not only autistic people, but to all women and mothers worldwide. Emma believes strongly in autism acceptance and fights for the rights of autistic people. She is well known for her advocacy work to end the abuse and mistreatment of autistic children that are being experimented on with unregulated, scientifically unproven, dangerous and abusive quack treatments like CD MMS. I watched the BBC episode where she was interviewed on the exposure of Leonardo Edwards of the Genesis 2 Church promoting the use of industrial strength bleach misleadingly disguised as a “cure all” from autism to aids which lethal mixture could cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, damage to the gut and respiratory failure. The genesis 2 church is well known for targeting vulnerable families with misleading information. Emma’s diligence in getting to the truth and exposing these criminals is truly remarkable. From my autistic family to hers, I couldn’t thank her enough for her strength and working with the community to lobby the government for legislation to protect autistic people from abusive unproven quack treatments, a much needed legislation. The world is a much better place because of people like Emma Dalmayne who advocate day in and day out. Emma’s courage gives strength to other mothers like myself, to campaign and fight for the rights of autistic people everywhere. “

As an autistic person and a parent to autistic children, she is in a unique position to help parents, like myself, to really understand the issues faced by our autistic children. As a parent, I felt paralysed by the various contradictory approaches to autism. I had no idea there was a huge worldwide population of autistic advocates, bloggers, writers, and campaigners. I was not aware of the neurodiversity movement, even though I had been a campaigner against racism, sexism, ableism, and homophobia for most of my adult life. When I discovered the neurodiversity movement, it was a “no brainer” that I should reach out to autistics themselves: who better to understand what it means to be autistic? Emma is part of a handful of people with family commitments and limited resources who fight against the abuse of autistic people. She is an advocate who builds bridges between autistics and the wider community, especially parents like myself, with her excellent advice and practical support in local groups. We are often told that autistic people are “in their own world” but Emma is firmly in the real world, fighting for autistic people like my son, who have been misunderstood, ignored, or confused for far too long. I’m not a fan of the term “national treasure”, but in this case I will make an exception. Emma Dalmayne is a national treasure! “

She has personally helped others who are struggling to advocate for themselves to find their strength and voice and brought serious abuse into the spotlight for all to see, her work is in the national media because the work she does is not highlighted enough and she is so committed to ending the abuse the vulnerable receive. Not only is she an advocate, she is also a teacher. Her work educates so many people about the people around them, sometimes the very people you live with. The way she teaches and highlights acceptance and explains what it is like to be autistic and how you can help an autistic person feel accepted and valuable (as society so misunderstands and undervalues them) is amazing, she has opened my eyes and her teaching has completely changed who I am as a parent and has made me want to be a better parent and person, her work has directly affected my family because she gave a voice to my children that I could understand as up until that point we had serious communication issues, I didn’t understand them and vice versa, now I am able to because 1 person decided to educate the world. For this I will be eternally grateful, she deserves an award as she works tirelessly to educate and help complete strangers through all types of media and has exposed the abuses that generally go under the radar. She literally is wonder woman and without this work it would be a darker place for a lot of people. Emma Dalmayne you are my hero, please never stop what you are doing, it is important, worthwhile and greatly appreciated.”

Thursday, March 24, 2016 – “I am on the autism spectrum and I do not want other families to be mislead and children to be forced or obliged to take poison under the misleading impression that it will cure their autism or make the negative parts of it less severe or negate the harmful comorbid issues that sometimes autistic people are more likely to get. There is no known cure for autism and the very idea of a cure is something that many autistic people disagree with as they feel that the world would be less diverse without it. Most autistic people are suspicious of those who claim to be able to cure autism, and for good reason – all too often it turns out to be the result of quack medicine such as this, and when a cure seems to have validity to it, the negative side-effects of a cure rule out the possibility of it being something someone in favor of some sort of treatment would want. It’s also worth bearing in mind that parents of children or carers of autistic people may be less likely to take the opinions of the people they are attempting to help seriously due to their age, their status as offspring, or their autism. This makes it all the more important that such people receive information from an objective source that they are willing to trust. As a person on the spectrum, I believe that having an autistic role model will help take autism more seriously, and having an autistic mother will challenge people’s perceptions of autism as an issue that only affects a stereotype of male children who are unable to live without support. “

After joining her support group for Autistic adults and parents of children also on the spectrum, I was transported into a different world from the one I knew. Full of amazing people who were celebrating their own, and their children’s unique gifts! And this group was so well protected, the first online group I had joined where admin patrolled the site nearly 24 hours a day, there was no bullying, no harassment, and no negative ‘cure talk’ allowed. It was a refreshing place to come to learn about elements of my Autistic daughters personality, and to find myself to be also on the Spectrum, followed closely by realising my own partner also was! Now we were all on board, and ready to accept and understand our lives in a way which we had never ever found anywhere before. Every day Emma was there, in the group, writing blogs and articles, giving advice, and coping stratagies for the more difficult areas of family life on the spectrum. Always there to add a comment, always helpful, with a real feeling of positiveness. I read of her own beautiful spectrum family, her life on the spectrum, and found myself having had many similar experiences. And that helped so much. To realise there are hundreds of like minded people, all with the same backgrounds, the same stuggles and challenges, all together, meeting every day, sharing magic milestone moments, helping each other through pain and trauma, all one big family, who care and accept not only the Autistic community, but the community as a whole, and be willing to accept all those with the same ethos to life. I cant begin to tell you just how much this group has changed my life, the good friends I have made, and the difference it has made to how we as a family live in harmony. After 6 months, I joined the admin team, where I help to keep our precious online family safe, and supported at all times. It wasn’t long before I started to see the other work which Emma had been doing. Her advocating for the autistic community was always clear, but I started to read disturbing posts about horrific ‘cures’ which were being touted. Emma appeared to be wading in whole style, to combat these awful treatments, to make everyone aware of what was happening. And she works tirelessly, every day, she keeps on pushing forward, demanding media coverage, demanding that these awful ideas of treatments and vile ‘therapies from the dark ages’ were put out to the Newspapers, to online groups, anywhere that would publish her articles. And slowly but surely she was making a difference. I have no idea where Emma gets her energy, she is driven from a deep seated need to help, and to protect vunerable children and adults from the horrors of barbaric treatments. But I have seen her work, and I am amazed, and I am humbled, that she finds time to make such an amazing difference. This lady has a heart of Gold. She is tough, and she is tireless, and do not expect sympathy if you have only negative talk of Autism, of the Community of learning differences as a whole, as it will not be tolerated. The way forward is clearly to understand, accept and accommodate everyone with both physical and neurological differences. Emma has taught me how to do this. And now, she has written a book!! And its a great book too!! Just what is needed, a simple, clear talking book, covering meltdowns, sensory issues, from an Autistic perspective. I am voting for her as 100& deserving of recognition of her tireless work (well, ok, I think she does get tired, but she just keeps on going regardless!) and for all the uplifting moments myself and my family have had since knowing her.
